Something that was popular a year ago is now considered an outdated reference, a popular meme can outstay its welcome in a month, and minor trends go in and out of fashion daily. Basically, just because something is widely accepted today doesn't mean it will have the same significance after some time passes. Perhaps to commemorate these trends, or just catalogue them for future reference, there are community threads online that talk about the trendy things that likely won't be cool in 5 years' time. Trends are tricky because of their very foundation. Something becomes popular because it's new and exciting, it presents something that captures people's attention, but if it doesn't provide long-term value, it tends to go away. Just look back at the trends that ruled the '90s, for example. Those are now considered to be an archaic concept in the current climate.

Then there's a rule of 'what goes around comes around.' There are cases of trends and cool things that were popular before, got old and abandoned, and then resurfaced when we least expected it.
