It’s no secret that HBO’s Game of Thrones had a historically terrible finish, with the final season being the most hated one out of all 8. The finale of such a successful show was so ill-received that it prompted fans to start a petition to rewrite and reshoot the season and replace the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Unfortunately, despite the fans’ uproar and tanking rating, HBO decided to leave the series as they were, instead turning their heads to new projects, like the upcoming House of the Dragon series that focuses on the past and history of House Targaryen. However, fans of the show had one final solace to turn to and it was the original novels the show was based on, A Song of Ice and Fire series, penned by George R. R. Martin.
Since the books, unlike the show, are still incomplete, fans across the world hoped that the storyline would be different from what Benioff and Weiss concocted and to people’s joy, Martin himself implied to a different ending.
Following the success of Game of Thrones series, the author of the books received plenty of attention that led him to different artistic endeavors, like an upcoming action role-playing game Elden Ring. Despite his busy schedule, Martin maintains a blog titled Not a Blog where he keeps his fans updated on his life.

In his blog, Martin detailed how his local community was affected by the Coronavirus outbreak. He updated his fans on the measures they took to ensure people’s safety as well as reassured everyone about his personal health.
In one paragraph he revealed that he’s currently self-isolating and spending “spending more time in Westeros than in the real world,” suggesting that the author is working on the last remaining two books in Ice and Fire series.
Albeit the reason for his return to writing might not be optimal, it’s understandable why fans would be excited about potentially seeing the release of Wind of Winter, considering that the previous chapter of the series, A Dance with Dragons came out all the way back in 2011.
