There are many ways to raise awareness about important issues, such as breast cancer. However, the majority of people only think about the illness when it affects the ones they love or when National Breast Cancer Awareness Month rolls around every year in October.
Whitney Zelig, together with her brother Chris and friend C.J. Koegel, found an innovative and eye-catching way to spread breast cancer awareness around the world. She used a hidden camera to film people staring at her bosom as she walked around New York City. Controversial and provocative? Yes. Original and creative? Also yes.

Whitney Zelig raised awareness for breast cancer in an innovative way
29-year-old Whitney’s goal was not only to raise awareness about the illness but to also encourage people to check their breasts for possible lumps.
She used a hidden camera to film strangers looking at her bosom
“Early detection saves lives,” reads the description beneath the video and we couldn’t agree more. “Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important. These exams are simple and only take seconds to do. Caught early, breast cancer has a 99% survival rate.”
As she walked around New York City, she drew a lot of stares from strangers
A doggo, the Statue of Liberty, Batman, and even the Cookie Monster couldn’t resist looking
The video is dedicated to the Zeligs’ mother, a survivor of breast cancer. And the awareness project seemed to work. Whitney drew the attention of lots of different people as she wandered around New York: men, women, and even caught the eye of the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street.
Sometimes, if breast cancer is in the early stages, women (and men) don’t have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. That’s why early detection is incredibly important and saves lives.
Dear Pandas, what do you think of Whitney’s video? Do you think it’s an effective way to draw attention to the important issue that is breast cancer? Would you be willing to do the same for a cause you believe in?
