Sexist Tweet ‘Congratulating’ Kirsten Dunst Receives Major Backlash (17 Reactions)

We all have favorite actors and actresses. I’m a big fan of Keanu Reeves and Emma Stone, for example — they’re both breathtaking, and if I had to rate them, I’d give them both an easy ‘A.’ Legendary actress Kirsten Dunst has a massive following, and it’s no wonder — she’s very capable, and plays her roles well.

Dunst recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is a humongous honor for any actor out there. However, when Reuters reported on the story, they tweeted out that Dunst was “best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend.” This created a massive backlash and the internet community branded the tweet as ‘sexist’. Not only that, but this entire affair gave birth to a whole new meme that celebrated how amazingly versatile actresses are.

Internet users started explaining why Dunst was much more than just “Spiderman’s girlfriend”

Twitter users came up with a new meme to celebrate how versatile actresses are

The essence of the meme is to show that Dunst and other actresses are far more adept at their jobs than some would believe they are. Internet users were quick to jump on the meme express and gave a whole slew of examples of how actresses could do male actors’ roles in films, but the reverse wouldn’t be true.

Dunst, who is now 37, has done a lot of amazing projects throughout her career, and she definitely deserves her Hollywood star. Her debut came in 1989 when she played a role in Woody Allen’s film New York Stories (one of my favorites). She then garnered a lot of attention after playing Claudia in Interview with the Vampire, which came to a theatre near you in 1994.

Among Dunst’s many, many roles is also the epic Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Perhaps Reuters thought that’s the role most people remember and that’s why they mentioned it in their tweet?

Dunst also played Peggy Blumquist in the awesome TV series Fargo in 2015, and in 2017, she received a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance in Hidden Figures. Her two most recent film appearances were in The Beguiled and in Woodshock. The internet’s backlash forced Reuters to delete their tweet about Dunst.

Dear Pandas, what do you think about this situation? Do you think Reuters was wrong to say Dunst was best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend? What do you think of the internet’s reaction? Which memes do you think have the most truth in them? Take part in the discussion and leave us a comment below.
