Most people do not associate that the meat we bought at the supermarket one day was a sentient being, who already felt pain, fear, happiness and sadness, just like us.
Esther, the wonder pig, came to Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter in 2012 as a “minipig” pig, which usually does not grow much. However, over time, they realized that the piglet had more than doubled in size, reaching almost 300 pounds.
Despite the fright, the two decided to continue to take care of Esther. But they needed more space for her, so they bought a farm and opened the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary. On the spot, they take care of Esther and other animals in need.
After a few years of living with the sow and many adventures, the couple wrote a book about history, where they tell of the transformation from “reluctant parents” to animal advocates.
