Looking back on the year can be both cathartic (or exhausting) – but this year’s YouTubes 2018 Rewind video, recounting the videos, music, and trends that dominated the year, has made people salty not nostalgic. In fact, people are so bitter that it is now the most disliked video in the platform’s history. In typical internet form, people had not only comments but created plenty of reaction memes to the video.
The trip down 2018 memory line beat out Justin Bieber’s 2010 hit single ‘Baby,’ which accrued more than 9.7 million dislikes over eight years, with 10 million dislikes in just three days. So what has everyone so wound up? While the video did center around creators, giving them dialogue throughout the video, people found it didn’t focus enough their actual content and was more catered to advertisers.
This comes as no surprise, however, over the past few years creators have become more and more frustrated over the platform’s algorithm. The changing program has caused creators stress and pressure to churn out mass quantities of videos, and thus burning themselves out. YouTube has evolved into an online giant but did not prepare any systems to take care of the boom of creators that have become the center of its culture.
